Which Courier Van Size Do You Need? A Simple Guide

Booking the right vehicle size saves money and avoids a wasted trip. Too small and it won’t fit; too big and you pay for space you don’t need. Here’s a quick guide to what each size carries.

The main courier vehicle sizes

• Car — documents, small parcels and light, urgent items. The fastest and most economical option.
• Small van — several boxes, small furniture, a few parcels beyond car capacity.
• SWB Transit (short wheelbase) — a solid mid-size load: pallets, boxes, medium equipment.
• LWB / XLWB Transit (long / extra-long wheelbase) — longer items and larger loads that need the extra length.
• Luton van — a big box body, ideal for bulky furniture and volume. Available with a tail-lift for heavy items, and in curtain-side for easy side-loading.
• 7.5 tonne — the largest option for heavy or high-volume loads, with tail-lift and curtain-side versions.

How to choose

Think about three things:

1. Dimensions — the longest and tallest single item has to fit through the doors and inside.
2. Weight — heavier loads may need a tail-lift or a larger vehicle.
3. Access — a tail-lift matters if there’s no forklift or loading dock at either end.
